Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ section regarding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and technology. It covers essential topics such as the current status of EV charger infrastructure in India, options for charging electric cars at home, definitions of key terms like EVSE and CMS, explanations of protocols like OCPP, and the role of Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in managing charging infrastructure. Additionally, it discusses how EV chargers work, the differences between various charger levels, the cost of installing an EV charger at home, and the availability of public charging stations. Furthermore, it outlines the functionality of On-Board Chargers (OBCs) and offers guidance on considerations to check before purchasing a charger, including OBC rating, power availability, and charging time. This information provides users with a comprehensive understanding of EV charging technology and infrastructure, empowering them to make informed decisions about EV adoption and charging solutions.

The electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in India is currently in the early stages of development. The government has set a target to achieve 30% electric mobility by 2030 and has announced plans to install over 5,000 EV charging stations in major cities and along highways. However, the implementation of these plans has been slow and the current EV charging infrastructure is still limited. Private companies and start-ups are also starting to invest in EV charging infrastructure in India. However, the lack of standardization and the limited number of EV models available in the market are major challenges facing the growth of EV adoption and the development of EV charging infrastructure in India.

Yes, you can charge with 15A socket or Type-2 Charger. Type-2 charger is highly recommended as it can establish communication with the car.

EVSE means Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment.

CMS means Charging Management System.

It is a communication protocol regulated by OCA (Open charge Alliance). It is a standard system that provides smooth communication between EV charges and backend charging system (CMS).

CPO stands for Charge Point Operator. It provides the charging infrastructure, manages the CMS and ensures the uptime of chargers to deliver reliable charging to user.

EV chargers are devices that use electricity to charge the battery of an electric vehicle (EV). They work by transferring electrical energy from the power grid to the battery of the EV. There are different types of EV chargers, including Level 1 (slow), Level 2 (fast), and Level 3 (fastest) chargers. The charging speed and time vary depending on the type of charger and the capacity of the EV's battery.

Level 1 EV chargers use a standard 120-volt household outlet and provide a charging rate of about 1-5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 EV chargers use a 240-volt outlet, similar to a domestic socket, and Level 3 EV chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, use a high-voltage direct current (DC) and 415V AC input.

The cost of installing an EV charger at home can vary depending on factors such as the type of charger, make of charger, the cost of labor, and any necessary upgrades to the electrical system. It will vary from Rs.40000/- to Rs.90000/-

Yes, there are public charging stations available for EV owners to use. These stations are typically located in public areas such as parking lots, shopping centers, and rest areas. They may be free to use or require a fee. Some charging stations are also available for use at hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

OBC comes as a factory fitted device with EV. It converts AC supply from the grid into DC to charge the battery of EV. Different EV comes with different ratings of OBC.

Few points need to be checked before buying the charger:
  1. OBC Rating
  2. Power availability at charger installation site
  3. Time availability to charge the vehicle
